So you’ve got a production coming up but I have no idea how to pick someone to film it. I got you covered. Here is a list of questions to ask yourself (and “The Cinematographer) when you have your first meeting.
- Evaluate their reel. Most cinematographers should have a reel to showcase their work. It’s almost like a digital resume that let’s you in on what they like to work on and what speaks to them as an artist.
- References from collaborators. Having a bad personality isn’t usually something that creatives advertise. But colleagues / previous clients can let you know if the cinematographer is a pleasure to work with. Check reviews if it is available.
- Communication is key. More than half of a cinematographers job is effective communication. Communicating with the client, director, their crew, actors, and also communicating the story to the audience.
- Experience. Cinematography is a marathon, it’s not a sprint. Having a cinematographer that has experience in what you are shooting is a huge benefit. Cinematographers that are just starting out may save you money but remember that more times than most, you get what you pay for.
- Technical competency. It’s pretty easy to regurgitate specs that are read online. Cinematographers should know about multiple camera platforms and not just one. They should have a keen understanding of lighting and composition.
