One of the biggest mistakes that can be made in filmmaking is overlooking pre-production. Most young filmmakers fall into this trap and find themselves saying the words that make me cringe every time I hear them… “We’ll fix this in post.” Post production is very expensive, especially when you could have avoided it with simple planning. The more that you can plan for a shoot, the smoother production will go. There will always be variables that are unexpected. But the key to great pre-production is having all the tools that you need and planning for the unexpected that could happen.
What are some of the ways you can prepare for pre-production?
- Scouting out locations
- Creating lighting plots
- Storyboards
- Shot list
The list could go on and on. Each position in the film industry has different ways they handle preparing for production. In the next couple of weeks, I’ll take one of these subjects and really define what it is, and how I utilize it in my projects. I’m constantly learning everyday ways to improve what I do and would like to share what I find to the world.
