Some of you may be experiencing challenges with getting on a film set. It’s a lot easier to get on film sets in markets like Hollywood, Austin, Atlanta, New York, and New Orleans because there are tons of projects and films being done. But for the people that may not be in areas where film is in high demand, there are things you can do to get on film sets.
1. Seems a little elementary, but you could always start your own project and create the film set you want to be a part of. Get a group of friends together and make weekend films. If you have a budget, hire other working professionals and make something great.
2. Networking with other film makers and inquiring if they need a PA of Grip. Starting from the bottom is how many people get their start and by truly working hard, you continue to get call backs. It maybe humbling to be a PA on a set, but I always say that the PA on one film set could be the director on another film set. With that said, and getting of topic, whenever you do get on a film set, treat each person and job with respect and you’ll continue to find yourself invited to more film sets.
3. Resources online that may have a call out for crew. It’s always great to get paid for your work. However, sometimes when you are just starting out, unfortunately you’ll have to work for little or no pay to build a reel, get credit, and/or find the right network of people. Here is a list of websites you can check to see if there is filming in your area:
www.productionhub.com
www.indeed.com
Monster.com

If you are just looking for experience and/or little pay, you can always search Craigslist. Be very cautious though because there is no screening process and anyone can post there. I’ve gotten a few Craigslist gigs before but just remember, there are shady people out there.
4. Check with your local film commission. Often times people forget film commissions exist until they need permits or locations. Film commissions are their for a reason. Utilize that great resource.
(A really cool site that I like that lets you see where movies have already filmed is www.movie-locations.com.)
