What is film stock emulation? Film stock emulation gives your digital camera footage the color and grain of film stock. I personally use film stock emulation on my projects and it gives the footage a much more organic feel. Also, by adding grain I’ve found the compression resolves better when watching content online. Digital footage with out grain can cause banding of the image in certain areas.
For many years, the film workflow has been to have the film scanned and then graded digitally. Both formats end up as digital files. Different film stocks responds to colors in different ways. Color correction and the addition of grain can be done in your NLE of choice. The thing that makes film stock emulation so powerful is the consistency of colors and the accuracy of matching it to particular film stocks. That’s exactly what software like Vision Color and FilmConvert provide.
